About Silver Hallmarking

You might be wondering: "Will my item be hallmarked?"

You may see sellers stating "Hallmarked 925". This is NOT a hallmark. The items may be stamped with 925 to signify it is 925 sterling silver.

Items that weigh under 7.78 grams do not require to be hallmarked under British legislation. (The Hallmarking Act 1973).

This means that many items such as earrings, small chains, pendants, do not require hallmarking. Indeed, the majority of our items do not require hallmarking but many have the 925 stamped on them. Usually on the back of pendants, near the fastener on a chain, and usually on the scroll back clip on an ear stud.

The hallmark is used to guarantee the quality of the product. A genuine hallmark will consist of four compulsary marks which give the following information:

  • Who made the item
  • It's guaranteed standard of fineness
  • The Assay Office where tested and marked
  • The year the item was tested and marked.
